This guide outlines practical methods for teams to synchronize drone displays with music, lighting, and media and using SMPTE timecode, show cueing, and professional show control workflows.   • SMPTE over network: exists in various workflows, but network timing requires more discipline (hardware, switching, QoS, clocking).

Advice: pick one primary timecode type for the production, and convert only at well-defined points (using a timecode generator/synchronizer), try to avoid “random adapters” scattered across the system.

  • In a show control-led setup, a controller sends “GO” commands to lighting using OSC, MIDI, or hardware triggers like GPIO and relays. This approach is useful when human intervention is needed, when the show includes safety measures, or when live adjustments are expected. The downside is that cue timing becomes more dependent on the operator, so you need clear show calling procedures and plenty of rehearsal.

1. Drones feel late compared to the music

What you see: Drone hits land after beat drops or accents.  

Common causes: The show starts with the wrong offset, audio playback adds buffering, or the routing on show day differs from rehearsal.  

What to do: Measure the actual start delay and apply one defined offset throughout the system. Lock the audio and timecode routing to keep it the same between rehearsal and the show.

2. Lighting slowly goes out of sync over time

What you see: Lighting appears aligned at the start but drifts as the show progresses.  

Common causes: An unstable timecode source, too many format conversions, or network jitter when timing depends on a network path.  

What to do: Use a dedicated timecode generator or synchronizer, simplify the conversion process, and avoid Wi-Fi for timing-critical signals.

3. Video is always behind the soundtrack

What you see: Video cues consistently feel late even when everything else is in sync.  

Common causes: Projectors, scalers, and media servers cause buffering and processing delays.  

What to do: Treat video as a subsystem requiring a fixed offset. Measure the end-to-end delay during rehearsal and adjust the timeline or cue placement accordingly. Confirm that frame rates match throughout the chain.

4. Timecode drops out during the show

What you see: Systems lose lock mid-show or cues fail to trigger reliably.  

Common causes: Loose cables, incorrect signal levels, overloaded playback devices, or unreliable converters.  

What to do: Secure connections, use dedicated outputs, stress-test the playback chain under realistic conditions, and simplify the timecode path.

5. Art-Net or sACN flickers or cues are missed

What you see: Lighting glitches, flicker, or fails to display some looks.  

Common causes: Network congestion, unmanaged switches, or IP addressing conflicts.  

What to do: Use managed switches, isolate the lighting network, and check addressing and routing. Keep lighting distribution separate from other traffic whenever possible.

If you cannot show stable synchronization during rehearsal with the exact routing you will use live, including backups, it is risky to proceed and hope for improvement on show day. Timing issues rarely get better under pressure, and the safest choice is often to fix the chain before performing publicly.
